I've been at this for a couple of hours... The water is trickling out at a very slow rate from the system. The upstairs rads are all open the downstairs ones are still full of water so I can't open them. Boiler is switched off. Vents all open upstairs.

Any ideas please, short of sucking the water out ? (Not a serious option.. but I thought I'd be down the pub by now.)

Atre you draining via a draincock? They are often garbage. The washer and/or spindle may have detached. Make sure floor covering is well protected. Leave hose connected.Totally remove the nut. If the spindle withdraws, but no washer, use a tool, or thick screw to remove the detached washer. If the spindle is still inside, try to grasp with long nose pliers. Have nut ready to immediately screw back in.
Water will get everywhere so be careful.
Alternaytively, phone a plumber and go for pint.:)

Sounds like you might be right Sam. I'll play the long game for now. Wait until the whole lot has trickled out before taking the plug out as you suggest. Thank you Sam.
