Ceramic over vinyl tiles?

Hello,
I want to lay ceramic tiles over my wooden kitchen floor.

Currently linoneum has been laid over the wooden (i.e wooden planks) kitchen floor . Over this have been layered vinyl tiles.

Can I lay the ceramic tiles over the vinyl tiles or do I have to go the usual route of screwing in 1/2 inch thick plywood over the wooden planks before putting on the ceramic tiles.

Either strip down to the floorboards or screw down plywood on top ( make sure you don't hit any wire or pipe )bearing in mind the floor level will be higher having said this,normally the tiles manufacter recommend the floorboards to screw down as well to stop any movement and creaking noise.
