Ceramic tiles on to thermoplastic tiles

Can I lay ceramic tiles on to old thermoplastic tiles that have been in my kitchen since the house was built 30odd years ago.

I've tried removing one and it breaks off in pieces about the size of a stamp leaving a thick, sticky residue behind.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Several of the BAL adhesives will work on vinyl etc, give their technical line a call to confirm which is best for your situation.
