I am attempting my own central heating and water installation in the house with copper pipes and solder ring fittings (like yorkshire fittings). The fittings in local plumber merchant have TP on them and I am not sure if they are lead free or not. The guy in the shop just gave me a blank look when I asked him and said they are all fine. Any thoughts?

Also, with regards to installing hot and cold water pipes and central heating pipes. I presume its a good idea not to have cold water pipes adjacent to hot water or central heating. Is there a guideline or a rule as to how far apart cold has to be from hot pipes to avoid heat transfer? Would it be ok as long as they don't touch each other?

Finally are there any regulations regarding insulating the pipes. Mate of mine who is a plumber says you only have to insulate first meter of the pipes coming out of the boiler.

Yorks type fittings are lead free.

If you are worried that pipes are too close and may transfer heat, you could put some insulation on one of the pipes. The pipes would have to be quite close, or in an enclosed area for this to be a problem though.

Insulate pipes that run through unheated parts of the house, eg. lofts, garage, outbuilding. I think you are confused about insulating near boiler. You must not insulate close to it, as the material may be conbustible. Anyhow, the area near a boiler is the last place where insulation is needed, as it is warm.

he probably means cylinder, insulate the pipework at least one meter or as far as practicable from a new cylinder

So whats the reality then. What do I have to insulate? Plumber mate knows I have no cylinder so just shows he's clueless.
I was planning to put cold pipe adjacent to central heating/hot water one in the same run - is that a problem?

Dianef, I think you are on your own in your quest here. Your questions are like a turkey voteing for early christmas.

TP probably stands for Triflow Potable, so lead free and fine for drinking water.
Find a merchant who does an imported range of fittings - half the price or less and just as good.
