Hi,

I've removed 2 chimneys from my house. My questions is the following - In the loft the remainder of the chimney stack remains supported by a set of gallows brackets and metal sheet.

The chimneys as far as I know are open at the top - should I have these covered with cowls or does it not matter if they are left open?

Had a roofer come over to work out a quote for me, he said I also need some pointing done on the chimney stack. I think some of the mortar between the bricks has eroded.

How important is it to have this done?

Would it not be better in the long run removing the stack and tiling/slating over?

If you are keeping it you need to maintain it in a safe condition so this will include any pointing.

agree with alastairreid take it down and forget it...gallows brackets...i could not sleep at night.....
