Hi

We are redoing the garden - replace patio, fence, shed and creating raised beds.

Got quotes from various companies and it is very expensive....

The whole garden is a patio. I want to make sure I know what to look out for when choosing slabs and try to go for the cheapest option (quality allowing)

I have a 3 year old daughter. I therefore do not want sandstone as the surface can be quite uneven and to have it smooth costs more. So I thought limestone?

Or are there any cheaper materials which will still look good?

I must be able to jet wash them.

Thank you for any advise.

Anyone please?

Also which is cheaper option

A) standard fence with wooden post and gravel board

B) cement post and gravel board

I was told that labour for all wooden is higher

Depends what you like the look of really, you can always get used 2x2 and 3x2 concrete slabs for £1-£3 each, then you just need a bit of sharp sand to lay them on

I really do not like concrete at all. But was assured that I can paint it same colour as fence so it blends in.

Is there any reason against having a raised bed against a shed or is it better against a fence? It could go either way, was just wondering if it is a bit idea to put it against a shed?

Do limestone slabs need to be sealed for outdoor use?

Thanks for your reply

Any type of natural stone will obviously be more expensive than concrete. Limestone is slighty cheaper than sandstone.

Small format flags like 400x400 will be cheapest of all probably but block paving is much nicer for a similar price. A bit more maintenance though.

The only way to really know is get like for like quotes which specify exactly what is to be used.

What did you get quotes for? And why did you not discuss your budget? There is no sense a contractor wasting his time preparing a quote for you to just turn around and say thats far too expensive. You need to work together and see what your options are based on how much you want to spend.
