We have a couple of 3-arm ceiling lights downstars - one in the dining room and one in the living room.

The living room one hangs straight but the dining room one is on a tilt.

If I move the chain to the centre notch in the ring, the wiring takes all the weight, the chain is slack and the light still hangs crooked. I suspect the wire is too short and so the chain isn't doing much work.

If I look at the living room one, one of the links has been widened:

What's the best remedy? Should I try and lengthen the wiring? Should I try and widen the chain?

Flex is too short. If you take if off the ceiling, there should be extra in the top section and usually a clamp which holds it in place.

I always pushed the spare up into the void, but if you find it is very short, take a link out of the chain and see how it hangs then.

You see the ring at the bottom of the chain attached to the fitting. It has a series of dimples. Put the bottom chain link into the middle dimple and it should hang straight.

It doesn't. That's the problem. If I try to fit it over the centre dimple, the entire chain is slack and the wiring takes the strain.

So, chain in middle dimple, make flex longer. Gravity MUST then make it hang straight as the weight is then all in the chain……..unless you have a very large magnet in your house...

The photo of the straight fitting has 3 chain links, the crooked fitting has 4, I suspect this is the answer....maybe the flex just isn't long enough
Good spot - didn't realise the chain was slightly longer. The plan was to extend the flex.

What a palaver that was. Removed the pendant light, extended the flex, had to trim some shroud to free the wires a little more. After much faffing, I managed to ge the chain to take the weight. And the lights were still crooked! But it was easier to see why - one of the arms had been bent outwards a little, probably to correct for the crookedness in the first place. After some manipulation, the three arms are all level and the lights are no longer crooked.

Thanks for the help.
