I'm looking at damp proofing my cellar, the previous occupant has done half the job and laid a concrete floor with a waterproof membrane underneath. I've been looking at waterproof membrane to put on the Walls and then plasterboarding over this, with ventilation provided with a window (where the old coal chute is) and an extractor fan, vented through an existing airbrick. What will happen if I do this without drainage (sump and pump). I've heard there is a risk of flooding, but what is the likelihood of this happening?

Not sure how the floors sealed. But would recommend product called Cellarcote by Sealocrete. Its a two part liquid membrane applied by rollers. Needs two coats. When we use it, we generally give the Walls a skim with render and lay a base on the floor. Then paint Walls and floors to create a complete tank, it will hold back 10 bar pressure. This stuff is good, buts it's not cheap. Better than any bitumen/rubber based membrane.

It really depends on the water table and if the cellar is prone to flooding or not. Liquid applied membranes will be completely useless without a masonry skin to hold them. As mentioned you need to investigate the likely worst case situation a bit more.

It does parlty depend on the water tables. But if you can create a proper tank it will hold. Check out the technical data for Cellarcote or phone there techs at Sealocrete.

tanking would be the way forward. If that isn't enough then a pump system would have to be installed. Pumps are cheap to run and maintain but not cheap to install.
