dimmer wiring

Hi,

I removed my old switch and I found only 1 cable with two wires Black and White and a copper ground. Can I install a dimmer instead of the switch?

Sounds like it, but you probably should have a PIR done, those cable colours sound most odd, sounds more like what I'd expect over in yank-land, but if you were over there, you wouldn't have posted in the UK electrics forum, would you.... ?
