Dripping toilet overflow pipe

Hi, the overflow pipe to the downstairs loo is dripping. It stops when I flush the loo and then starts up again about an hour later. Interestingly I can hear the cold tank in the loft going when I do flush - is this connected? Apologies to your plumbing gurus if this is a wimpish, girly request for help! Thanks

sounds like the float valve in the toilet cistern is not shutting fully or needs adjusting.

the noise from the tank in the loft filling is probably because the toilet cistern is filled from the tank and not the mains water supply.

lift the lid of the cistern and hold the float valve up if it stops filling then it just needs adjusting if it still drips then the diaphragm is passing water and needs cleaning out or new one fitted.
