Could you recommend a good, mid-range sander please? I need one that is easy to use (I've never used one before), lightweight and uses replacement papers that are reasonably priced.

I'll need it for sanding wood and taking varnish off furniture.

And any tips for use would be really good! (I'm thinking of starting with a bit of scrap wood, rather than my treasured antique furniture!)

I feel like I'm moving into the big league now, getting power tools!

Ideally you'll need two sanders- maybe a quarter sheet one and a triangular sole detail sander.
Makita and Bosch are popular makes, but Wickes have a selection along with the papers you will need.
Removing varnish will clog the papers readily, and do consider dust extraction with whatever kit you buy.

Just the larger flat areas - in my day they were called 'palm' sanders.
A 1/2 sheet sander would do just as well.....the choice is yours.
An endless belt sander is perfect for roughing material, but thats probably best for bench tops rather than furniture.
