can't seem to find any confirmation on the web for this seemingly simple job. Want to add an inline switch to a metallic lamp which is wired with 3 core. Is it a matter of splitting the live across the switch terminals? The plastic switch seems to have earth terminals, do i use these or leave the earth wire intact along with neutral? cheers.

Afaict the two small terminals at the side are intended for the neutral and earth but they are an extreme pain to wire and if starting from one length of cable I wouldn't cut either.

...Assuming there's a route through the switch for the N & E cores where they won't get damaged.

You can often just pop those side terminals out without damaging the plastic, thus leaving route for the uncut N+E.
