fixing a lintel to piers

Good morning people!
I have a rather simple project and one of which I'm not familiar with but I fitted a lintel to the top of my piers for a garage I'm building. The question is, how does this tie into the piers its resting on cause I imagine if I made cement, it would all squish out again. The lintel I have is 3.5m x 6"x4" so there is a fair weight.

Also to level it, would slate work since its thin and non compressable?

If it's just an ordinary lintel over -say - a door or window, just bed it on mortar. It will squish out a bit, but not much.
