When did it become okay to screw into the downpipe between each join.
I though the weight of the downpipe was carried by the clips and not screwed to each other thus hanging of the guttering.
It's become a habit of fascia installers so they never ever come apart and so avoids call backs. Only thing is it takes one leaf to catch the screw to start a blockage.
If the offset is huge then yes, screw it to the pipe but a small screw and at the top of the pipe not the side or the bottom!
With respect: a "huge offset" is simply the same as a "horizontal" pipe run. Clips secure the joins, and clips fix the stability of the pipe.
Occasionally, if no fixing can be found then pipe and fitting can be "glued" but, for my money, never screwed.
