The starter motor has become intermittent on my Freelander...I see somebody sells solenoid replacement/repair kits on ebay for all sorts of makes and models.

Anyone used these? £15 must be better than £150 for a whole new starter!

If you take your starter to a motor factors, they can send it away for repair ( often 24hr return).
Cost around £40 or so, and at least you get your own starter back!

Did you forget the link? Not to worry .........
If you had the notion, you could check it with a multimeter? Fully battery voltage across the starter motor when cranking? If so its the brushes, or internal connections. If not its the solenoid or external connections.
Brushes would be my first thought, then solenoid, or do both if you can get them? Did you try E-Bay from a UK parts supplier? Unfortunately the motor factors here do not have the above service available.
