Hello

Can anyone tell me what the on-board dialer in a Galaxy 2-20 panel does?

Is it like a voice dialer that gives a verbal message when answered like an external voice dialer, or is it more tones / data for linking up to a monitoring station rather than ringing mobile phones etc?

To expand slightly:

The Galaxy onboard PSTN can still be used to connect with Honeywell's RSS software, although as digital exchanges become the norm, this analog traffic becomes less reliable.

The PSTN can also connect with compatible alarm receiving centers. When the panel uses the PSTN interface, the underlying protocol requires a handshake with the connecting device. If no handshake is provided, then the panel will register a fault. This means that you cannot use the interface to blindly dial your phone, as the panel will register a fault.

The Galaxy panels PSTN interfaces do support TAP based SMS. This is a service that allows the MODEM to dial up a TAP receiver and send alarm information to a mobile phone. These services are pretty much one-way and are pay per dial and can cost as much as 50p per message. A single alarm event on the galaxy can give out multiple messages, so this can become quite expensive. It would also be far too expensive for open/close messages to be sent when setting and unsetting the system.

Now that a G2-12 panel can be picked up for less than £40, it makes sense to start looking at other extended information messaging monitoring options to add on to the panel. An Ethernet module can be added for less than £50 and low cost self monitoring is available to go with it (and gives the option of full remote control via Android phone). There's also the option of GSM based add-on modules, but they are pricey at around £200 for the add-on.

Thanks for that great reply.

Ethernet module - do you have a link to what its capabilities are?

Can the alarm itself be set/unset/reset or its status found as well as emails on activation?

Is the control done via internet browser?

The Ethernet modules don't provide an HTTP virtual keypad interface directly, but there is software available to do this if you run a server 24x7. Small Linux computer like the Raspberry Pi can be used for this if you know how to configure one to run Java.

There are a few different ways to get Ethernet connectivity with the Galaxy panels:

E080-2 - £170
E080-4 - £170
LCE-01 (G2 panels only) - £49
Raspberry Pi (G3/Dimension/Flex only) - £?
GT20 - £170
GT40 (GSM) - £270

Functionality is sketchy from Honeywell, but listed here:
