the joys of living flame fires, used only a couple of time per year the pilot develops problems of the flame retracting away from the thermal and igniter, this is done slowly if fire is on low and imediate if gas is set to high. forward flame decreases and rear enlarges causing shut down.

causes considered

igniter fault

wind factor ( has been noticed when winds are high as the rear flame-larger retracts to side casing) possibly seperate problem

ventillation, placements of coals recomended by installer.

alternative gas supply fault/ pressure drops not yet investigated.

Get the fire serviced -appears it may require a new pilot assembly.

Remember those yellow flames that look nice will kill you if the fire/flue isn't working properly. Many pilot assembly's constitue the safety system - therfore don't use the fire until its fully checked out.

mmm yes not smoke tested the flue for a while, will try it.
flames not yellow still blue, just gets smaller when turned up.
last change of pilot assembly last until next day when winds was up seemd to draw the flame to the outa casing again.

If oxy pilot jet flame shrinks when gas fire is turned up it might well be undergassed..i.e. not enough for both, especially if a new oxy pilot has been fitted, as this eliminates a constriction/blockage in the old one, which might have produced the same symptoms.

Get all the usual tests done by an RGI. If satisfactory then you need to speak to fire supplier. Don't use the fire in the meantime.

yeap flues ok via smoke test only, however the flames tips have turned yellow rest remains blue.

Sounds very much like the aeration port on the the pilot tube is partially blocked, giving the yellow tipped flame. The pilot light should only touch the tip of the thermocouple and be pointed and blue. Take the earlier advice of getting it serviced, the engineer should spot this and strip the pilot assembly, clean the aeration port and also check the pilot injector which can also bung up resulting in a smaller flame that jumps off the thermocouple.

will do thanks lads,
ive looked up ods to relate to the sensor and would agree with what you are saying.
