Hi, we have a fireplace which is currently empty and not used except for a capped gasline from an old gas boiler which used to be in this space. The chimney has been cleaned and a new pot has been put on the top of the chimney. We have an old cast iron victorian fireplace for the space which we want to turn into a gas fireplace. The fireplace has a firebasket its all the rest we need to plan. We know we need this to be done by a registered Corgi gas person but what do we need to do? My understanding is that we need to run the existing gas line to a gas ignitor for a fireplace? Do we need the hearth to run under the cast iron fireplace? Also who am I looking for in the phone book that can do this job?? ie: is it a plumber? Help! We are in over our heads! Just want a nice
fireplace that works for this winter! Thanks for any help!

I'm not an expert so the following are only views

1) Thne flue will need to be lined (or the condition of any existing liner checked)

2) I suspect that there may be some difficulties in putting a gas burner into an old fire surround.

I' be inclined to ask a specialist fire installer to check out the proposal

ask family and friends if they have a corgi engineer you could use.
Recommended engineers are best way to find one.
If not try corgis corporate page in yellow pages.
or go to www.corgi-gas-safety.com and look one up near you.

You will only need a flue liner if the initial flue flow test fails to provr the flues integrity, it is in no way a necessity to have a flue liner for this type of fire, only if you have a problem with your flue, in which fitting a flue liner will correct.

Before you go getting anybody in check that they do these types of fireplace on a regular basis. If they dont, keep looking for one who does.

Better to wait and have the job done properley than to rush and have it messed up by someone who doesnt know fully what hes doing.

Good luck

I would ask in a fireplace shop. They know what can fit your space etc, and will give you a quote. It's a little bit specialist and they've been round all the queries!
