We have been thinking about having a glass tile splashback in our new kitchen, however the sales assistant in the tile shop has told us that we cannot use glass tiles above the hob as they will discolour. I have never heard of this and wonder if anyone has any experience of this happening. Thanks for your help

You can get painted glass splashbacks (Planilaque). This is not a tile as such, but a piece of glass that is painted and backed with aluminium foil to protect the painted surface. This is stuck to the wall, like a tile. This material is cut to size (including cut-outs for switch plates, if required) and the edges polished. The glass can also be toughened, if the heat from a cooker might be a problem. Also, you can get a 'low iron' glass. This does not have the usual green edge that you get with normal float glass. It looks more like Perspex, so you get a more pure colour if the glass is painted. This should be available from a good glass merchant in your area.
