We have just purchased a new property and went to try the central heating a couple of days ago. The boiler is firing up but very little heat is going to the radiators. After leaving it on for about an hour a couple of the radiators were warm, however, the majority were still cold. We have had 2 different plumbers out....the 1st said he thinks it may be the pump......the 2nd has said that he thinks the pipes going from the boiler to the radiators are too small and are only likely to be able to heat 2/3 rads. We have very little knowledge on this so really dont know what to do now......any advice would be greatly appreciated???

What size are the pipes?
What size are the rads?
Did they try anything else like turn the good rads off to see if problem ones heated?
Are the pipes leading upto the valve hot?
Do you have thermostatic radiator valves?
What else can you tell us about the system?

Gloworm ultracom 30 sxi is a system boiler so do you have a hot water cylinder?

Can you see a motorised valve? It may be sticking. What is the pump speed?

Is the hot water okay?

Daniel.

Hello, thanks for your replies.

In answer to your questions, the hot water is working fine. We believe the size of the pipes is 15mm. All the rads are different sizes, mostly quite big. There are 8 in the house which is a big 4 bedroom chalet bungalow. The pipes leading up to the valve are hot. Yes they did try turning off the good rads. I don't know much about plumbing so I dont know where to look for the motorized valve.

30 kW boiler is a big output boiler. How many rads? The zone valves wil be in the airing cupboard near the hw cylinder(usually). Maybe a few pics?

Make and exact model of boiler?

How many pipes connected to the big blue cylinder?

The boiler is a Glow Worm Ultracom 30sxi. There looks to be 3 pipes connected to the blue cylinder.

I should have read the title more carefully!

I would expect two or four.

Two
1. Top
2. Bottom

Four
As above, plus:

3. Side - middle
4 Side - near the bottom.

Do you have any motorized valves? Will look similar to these:

Please identify the two (or is it three?) large grey devices on the floor in pic 4.

No worries :D :D

Yes, we do have a motorised valve (underneath the boiler). The grey things in the airing cupboard are pumps for the shower and taps in the house.

Could we have pic showing the pipes connected to the underside of the boiler?

Sorry, you are correct, there are 4 pipes coming from the cylinder. I have attached several photos of the cylinder and boiler, hopefully they will show you what you need to see, if not let me know. Thanks for all of your help.

The flow and return pipes connected to the boiler seem to be 22mm, so I'm confused about which pipes the installer say are 15mm, apart from those connecting to the rads, which are normally 15mm.

You said earlier that you have 8 rads. Could you post a list giving the size (height, length - in mm) and type (1 or 2 panels; 1 or 2 fins).

Do the rads heat up OK if you have the HW cylinder heating at the same time?

If only the CH is on, does the boiler keep stopping and starting?

What are the values of d.40 and d.41? (See pages 49 and 50 in the Installation Manual.)
