Hi,

I have done a search and read the relevant building regs document but still cannot find a definitive answer.

Just had a hip to gable roof conversion and wanted to know if it is acceptable for the gutters to empty onto the garden?

Previously this was the case but I had expected building regs to require the downpipes to go to a sewer or a soakaway.

Currently in discussion with the builder (3rd party building inspector) as to what is acceptable.

Would appreciate it if anyone could clearly define what is required.

Many thanks

Neil

New rainwater drainage has to go to a soakaway, to a water course or to existing drains in that order of preference, and you can only use the next preferred option if the preceding option is not available or impractical

If you use your existing gutters, then you can use the existing drainage. But a garden soakaway would not be a problem if you can fit one in

Best to take the rainwater to the plastic crate soakaway type, don't see the point of into the garden, will take longer to drain down specially in the heavy clay soils creating muddy/flood area and if it's too near the building footing etc

How does a hip to gable conversion create new gutters?
The amount of run-off will also remain the same, surely?
