I would like to hang a large mirror and some new curtain poles in our living room. Our walls are plasterboard (dry lined) and the main brick is approximately 2 inches beyond the plaster board.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Hang on the plaster board or go beyond into the brick work?

Any help appreciated as I am really rubbish at DIY

Ideally your mirror would be best fitted directly to the stud or batten in the wall.
But in some cases this is either not suitably located or the walls are dot'n'dab and no timbers are available to be fixed to.
You can buy spring toggle fixings that will be able to fit in the 2 inch void.
But for heavy objects, if I could not locate a stud. I would go straight in to the masonry behind the boards or consider fitting a secure timber between masonry and plasterboard, that will need a a bit extra work and some repair patching.
