During manufacture, drives are given a reserved number of sectors to cater for bad sector situations. This number is fixed by the manufacturer.

When a bad sector is encountered, data is reallocated to one (or more) of the reserved sectors and a counter (the number of remaining reserved sectors) is decremented. When this number reaches a threshold, again set by the manufacturer, the SMART system will flag the drive as failing.

To use your drive as an example:

05) Reallocated Sector Count 1 1 63 636 Failed

This is showing SMART attribute 5 (The reallocated sector count). It's current value is 1 and it's previous worst value is 1. However the Threshold is 63! and the number of reallocated sectors is 636!

In laymens terms, you have exceeded the threshold and exhausted all the reserved sectors. REPLACE IT YESTERDAY!

Have a look at the date stamp on the drive. Maxtor drives generally have a 3 year warranty. You can check the warranty status at www.maxtor.com.
