My sister called to tell me the light has flashed on whilst driving.

She looked in the manual and it states there's an engine management fault.

Any ideas ?

flashed on and off while when driving or come on and stayed on?
If its on all the time its logged a fault and the codes will need to be read.

The problem seems to be worse.

Heater plug waring light is constantly flashing and when she first start's up my sister says the get 'ENGINE WORKSHOP!' warning lift is on.

Can any VW autosparky experts shed light on this please ?

This lamp is used to warn of several malfunctions, but the fault code will be stored.
EGR anyone?
John :)

Yes or brake light switch .............

It seems the engine control unit (ECU) keeps watching to see if you put your foot on the brake, killing the engine revs if you do. So if the switch goes faulty it throws a fault code.
They tend to tick over high, and have quite high torque even at low revs, hence the feedback from the brake light switch.

Not sure why you have the middle brake light and not the other two? Just glance at the fuse first because the switch might be expensive. Best to get the codes read if you can, most small garages can read them for you, save bothering the main dealer.

Those sisters ............ ;)

Interesting, thanks.....it sounds like if Mr.Spanner can sort the stop lamps then he might be on to a winner!
Sounds like the switch s working though if the high level lamp is coming on.
John :)

Yes could well be, there is a bunch of wires on the switch .............

When I get the car to look at over the weekend, I test the brake light bulbs.

If they're alright, then I'll look at the switch.

It would be nice if its something simple although it seems bizarre that the engine management light should flash on as well as the heater plug light for a faulty brake light switch.

It could be a two or even three pole switch, but you would think that only one pole would be used for the brake lamps.....
All this just makes your head spin!
Get the stop lamps going, Mr. S and we'll take it from there.
John :)

Problem solved.

Both brake light bulbs were blown.

New bulbs fitted and no warning lights.

I do so enjoy the simple fixes in life.

Thanks for the reply postings folks, most obliged.
