Hi
Has anyone found it hard to get the right product for your job. Or is there things you need and no where sells them. I'm opening a building shop And wondered if anyone had any surgestions.

Skirting board ladders and Tartan paint are hard to come by!:sneaky:

Seriously though it is odd fittings for shower enclosures, hardware for cabinets and windows, obsolete rainwater fittings etc, that are hard to find there are specialist online stores that do well selling them, but for a shop like yours it will not be economic to stock odd things.

The best thing you can do is employ ex-tradesmen who know about building and can understand what a customer needs and build a reputation for going the extra mile and sourcing stuff.
We have a local Hardware store where the guy has the attitude if we haven't got I will get it for you, unlike the "computer says no!" attitude you get in the retail chains. He does well from local residents and before I retired I found him very useful to get bits for customers.

A few assortment boxes behind the counter of small sundries like O rings, fibre washers, self tapping screws and odd things like large brass screws for fixing cisterns and toilet pans to the wall where you just want a few not a box of 200 at a stonking price are useful!

Good luck with your enterprise(y)

Random idea......

Many sheds and garages across the land have old Quality Street tins etc, full of odds and sods.
Put up cards in local shops, offering to take such clutter off peoples' hands?
OK - I wouldn't give up my tin of "just in case" bits n' bobs, but I bet there are many people - widowers, divorcees, kids who've acquired stuff from their parents, etc - who would be happy to declutter.

If tradespeople know you've got tubs of random goodies to sift through in an emergency, might be a bit of a draw?

not a good buisness model to stock items that are seldom sold
all floor and shelve area needs to pay its way

padding out the basics should be trial and error over the months and years
not too important if you buy 3 and sell 2 your not out off pocket
if you have to buy a pack off 12 and sell 1 or 2 its dead money and space till you sell the rest

Sorry. Don't even think about outlaying any money. It won't work. Find a new idea. This one is doomed to fail. If it's hard to get - that's because there is no market for it.

That's actually a better idea, start selling scented candles & other such homeware stuff - your shop will do a lot better :)
