Hello,

Yes the spelling is correct. These are cement strips that run along the hip edge on a slate roof, mine are damaged and I've been quotes £1100+vat to repair them but I was thinking of maybe tackling these myself but I can't find any information about them anywhere. Has anyone every heard of these things?

Cheers,
Neil.

A photo would make things easier?
Hips dont have "edges". Anyway, I've never called them edges.
Slate roof planes that meet at a hip can be closed: thats where the slates are cut to allow the roof planes to meet on the hip.
Or use various types of wet & dry hip tiles (same as ridge tiles) to cover the join.
Or lead roll flashings.

Thanks for your replies. Its basically a 3" wide / 1" deep strip of cement that runs the entire length of the 'hip' on each corner of the house. The house is in North East Scotland and I've seen it on other houses with these but never in any other part of the country.

I've attached a couple of photos, not great, but you get the idea...

The second picture shows the damaged piens with sections missing and letting water in.

I did consider replacing with lead, but the roofing specialist advised against it as due to the wind up our neck of the woods it won't last. I may adopt another method, but this would also mean replacing all the other piens which are fine.

Cheers,
Neil.
