hot water control valve

changing a boiler timer to a ST9400a. the system is a gravity hot water system, so i read i have to set as a mini programmer if i have not got a hot water control valve.
my question is how do i know if i have a hot water control valve

where did you read this?
I suspect it refers to a motorised valve, if you have one (or more), then you should be able to have full control.
