It's daunting re-installing windows the first time. If you're competent, then go for it. You put the xp disc in and restart. You need to ensure that the pc will look at the cd drive first before the c drive when it boots. Then follow the instructions. If you don't know how to get it to boot from the cd drive first then I’d recommend that you let someone else do the reinstall for you.
Bear in mind that you'll need to reinstall all drivers for hardware. To do a total reinstall can take the best part of a day if you have a lot of programs to reinstall. Be warned.

when was the last time you cleaned up (DEFRAG AND INTERNET OPTIONS AND HISTORY) Theres a lot of things to consider, such as size of hard drive-memory-cpu..etc...give it a clean first, then see if it runs any faster...oh and one last thing you may have a virus.

i agree with vokera80e the two options he mentions are under "system tools" the options are called "disk clean up" and "disc defragmenter"

another of the options in the "system tools" is "system restore" which can restore /remove programs that are slowing the computer down if you can remember when it happend

another thing you must keep in mind if you do a full windows install as said above you need to reinstall all your programs
THIS INCLUDES INTERNET programs so youll need the discs and paswords ect to reinstall just remember most off your internet information is held on the servers computer so you dont loose your favorates if your on aol dont know about the rest ;)

one other thing.

i once tried reinstalling xp, it started so i left it to its own devices, came back all done. I soon realised though, that as it was reinstalling it, it had realised that xp was already on the hard drive, it found another partition on the hard drive and installed it self there, so in effect i had xp x 2 not good.

If you have that may problems format your hd and start again.

but to be honest i dont think you really need to, when i had win 98 i used to format the hd once a year (approx) since i have had xp i have never need to, as has been said, you can run disc clean, defrag and best of all system restore.

Its amazing what junk you do acumilate on a pc and a really good clean out / virus check / specialist fixer disc (i have norton) will do
