I would like some form of fire in my living room and can either have a flueless gas (there is a gas pipe under the floorboards already) or an electric fire. I am looking towards electric but I would like to know how noisy is the fan as I have been told that some can be quite loud and as it is going to be in quite a small room will it be obtrusive? Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you...

My only experience was in a holiday house which had one of these "real flame" effect hearths. The effect was excellent. It had a two speed fan giving 1 and 2 kilowatt outputs. The low speed, 1 KW setting was hardly audible and the 2KW was not obtrusive. However, it was mounted on a solid floor and, on floorboards (which you have), it might be more noisy. We found, as it was sited in a fairly small room, that, even late in the year, the 1 KW setting was entirely adequate. You could experiment with a portable fan heater to see what the noise level is likely to be.

Hi...thank you both for replying. After searching the web and looking at the links on here I have discounted a flueless gas fire and was thinking of a balanced flue fire but have decided to go for an electric one. The only problem is that I know that some of them can look really tacky with the 'flame effect' and finding a showroom so that I can go and see what they look like when they are working is proving difficult! Anyway I will keep looking...
