I've been sent an application form as one of these.
What can I use to read/print it?
It starts off:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
<?mso-application progid="Word.Document"?>
- <w:wordDocument xmlns:w="http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/word/2003/wordml" xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns:w10="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:word" xmlns:sl="http://schemas.microsoft.com/schemaLibrary/2003/core"
....

thanks

it looks like it ought to open in Word but I don't understand what it's doing.

Have you got MSWord?

If it is indeed a MS 2007 word document you have received you can convert it for free at http://www.docx2doc.com/

There are some MS office updates to allow earlier versions of Word to read docx files - I think you've already been given the link a few posts up.

If you work in the NHS, Office 2007 Enterprise is yours for £18 yep, 'eighteen holes' - Licenced 1 desktop plus 1 lap top.
Cheap as chips.
;)

I ran all the updates, downloaded the file coversion thingy from MS, but nothing changed.
Maybe my WOrd , 2002SP3 is too old.
I downloaded OpenOffice some time ago, and that opened it without problems.

Perhaps your version is too old

Maybe the form has some Excel format in it but pasted into word which your version can't handle?

have you tried opening it from Excel?

The Office package doesn't use a standard XML file - hence the notations all over about Word 2003. To use it you need Word 2003 - no other version will suffice. Although since you only want read it or print it off you need to download the 2K3 XML viewer here. Once you've got it installed you will most likely have to forcibly open the xml file with IE:

1) Load up Internet Explorer (you need version 6.0 or probably better).
2) Click file->open.
3) Click browse.
4) Find your xml file and click open.

Hmff. Well that would explain it, thanks. It was Office XP Small Business OEM. Wonder if they do a less-than-full-price-upgrade...

I'd bin MS Office if I were you and download the latest stable version of openoffice - it's free and will open all office file formats and save to them as well.

Exactly. If they lock you into upgrades to read a file then simple.... Bin the OS.
I'm using PCLINUXOS and Open Office. Never looked back and the Money I saved allowed me to Buy an Asus EEEPC.
Cheers
Bob

If you have a genuine version of m/s office/word prior 2007, then the update to open a 2007 file is free.
