Hi All,

Hoping someone can help....The hot surface igniter keeps burning out.
I've just tested a new one, I'm getting approx 170VAC which drops to 120VAC once the burner has lite but it seems the PCB is not switching the igniter off. I've left the boiler running for 3-4 minutes and there's still power to the igniter.

I was thinking it might be the flame detector? But if it was this then it wouldn't keep the gas valve open? Does this point to the PCB?

I appreciate it's an old boiler but can't afford to replace it or keep buying igniters

Any idea's appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

We are not allowed to give advice here on gas/combustion issues.

The correct solution is to get a competent boiler engineer to diagnose the problem and fix it.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your suggestion, unfortunately the two engineers I've had out were useless and didn't even test the igniter or PCB outputs. Both just interested in replacing the boiler. As an electronics engineer I know the issue with the boiler is very simple and it doesn't need replacing!

I will continue to fault find myself. Maybe you can just tell me if the igniter is on a timer?

I wouldn`t even tell you what day it is if you continue to work on a gas boiler when you`ve been told not to!

Surely as a professional electronics engineer, you will have a proper salary and be able to easily afford to replace the boiler?

You might also be able to see what the PCB circuit is meant to do when the flame is detected.

Hi Tony,

He says "as an" which would usually be interpreted to mean as a currently working engineer.

Rather than a "retired engineer"!
