Our water comes from a private supply through 63mm MDPE pipe. Most of this is buried but some lengths (about 100m from our house) are still exposed and vulnerable to freezing.
Currently we are wrapping with bubblewrap secured with baler twine but, although it seems to be working, it's a bit 'heath robinson' and I wonder if anyone knows of a product that would be more suitable especially for prolonged periods at the very low temperatures.

750mm of soil?

can it be boxed in and insulated with for instance polystyrene balls?

polyurethane foam would work (formwork then fill with foam, but i'd imagine it's cost a mint.

2.5inch armaflex insulation, not cheap though

Thanks for all your replies.
We are going to have a dig about and try to bury more of it but some areas are solid rock - we should be able to pile stuff on top though, I wasn't sure if that would be as efficient as burying the pipe but will give it a go .
There will still be some bits that we can't bury (like the tank taps) and we will have a go at making a box lined with pu foam and fix that on with......ah yes, baler twine!
Will look up the armaflex which may be useful for the bits that are left.
Thanks again
Sue

be carefull to get a coat of soft sand or armaflex around the pipe when it is buried, even though 63mm mdpe is thick walled and up for some abuse, it should be protected below ground against puncture (imagine it getting driven over at some point)
