Can anyone tell me how to insulate a normal wooden tongue & groove shed..??
I want to build a model railway i it so there will be electronics in there.
I imagine i will be using insulating material & plasterboard but do i need any sort of damproof membrane..??

Thanks

I would just use polystyrene sheet foor the walls and roof (the stuff they use to insulate concrete floors), with a hardboard top sheet. Build a false floor and gain use the polystyrene, with dpm underneath it. If the shed is treated I wouldn't worry about dpm on the walls. You will need some form of permanant ventilation, perhaps some soffit vents installed in the walls, otherwise you will have damp problems on the cold days. ;)

Thanks for the reply,
Basically, i use a damp-proof membrane all over, cover with polystyrene & then hardboard. I will put in a few vents too.

Thanks again

A project I am also considering. For ventilation between shed wall and internal skin I was thinking of taking the internal skin to say within 1/2" from the roof and same distance above the floor.
If I was to use soffit vents, presumably I could take the internal skin to the floor and also roof, however would I need a soffit vent between each upright timber frame support also would I need only 1 soffit vent say near the roof or would I also have to have one near the floor as well.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, I am a bit lost with your post. The bit between the two skins if going to be full of polystyrene sheet, so why would you leave the gap. The ventilation is to get air from the outside to the inside of the shed. You would be surprised how quickly your lungs will recycle the volume of your shed and expel lots of moist air in return.

It would be a good idea to put vents at high and low levels to encourage circulation of air. ;)

It's only a shed, it'll have air gaps all over it.

nstreet thanks for reply.
I have probably confused those who read my post. To clarify I misread Dannyk post of 6 Nov and was basically just going to use a damp proof membrane tacked onto the upright supports then cover with hardboard; forgot all about the polystyrene. Fitting this between the shed wall and hardboard would then leave no gap as you advise. Note your point on ventilation.

Thanks again
