We have a house about 5 yrs old and had earth leakage installed about 2 yrs ago.
For the past year we have been getting intermittent tripping of the earth leakage circuit breaker and cannot find where the problem is.

Is there a way, a device I can attach to an individual circuit breaker to see which circuit has the problem, or is there another way.

Of late, (and we have had rain in the past month), it is tripping every day – day and night.

Thanks in advance
Bwana

sorry to say there is no "wonder device" it is a case of trial and error.

as you say it is happening more since it has rained that would imply water is getting in to your property and into something electrical, check for any damp patches near electrical outlets

You could try switching off your mcbs (or remove fuses) one at a time for one dayand see if when x mcb fuse is off does it stop. The problem with that is there is no gurantee since if the neutral goes to earth that will also cause your rcd to trip. but it is worth a try.

The easiest way is to get an electrician to test it all with an insulation resistance tester

The earth leakage device is working properly. You have an Earth Leakage.
Most likely a Nail or Screw has been driven through a cable somewhere. I've come across this before. Get yourself a Digital voltmeter, connect the -ve to an earth point somewhere and start probing plaster work, plaster beading, socket or light socket screws, to see if you can pick up any voltage where there shouldn't be any. this will be better performed when its raining as its easier of the current to travel. ;)

What you are suggesting is dangerous, i am sorry to disagree on the grounds of saftey. Even electrcians do not do what you are proposing. you forget this is a do it your self forum, not do in your self, as what will probably happen if he was to do as suggested. electricty has no prejudices it kills anyone.
