Someone has tried to get into my garage and in the process has left a broken off key in the lock. So, although they didn't get in....nor can I.

Has anyone any ideas on how to obtain entry? I'm guessing that if I can't get hold of it with nose pliers to pull it out, I could drill the lock out? Really though, I'm guessing.

Any ideas gratefully received. By the by, there is no other access to the garage, hence whatever I do I have to do it from the outside.

Thanks,

Richard

fish it out with a small fine wire, sewing needle etc. takes time but it does work

try and drill into the broken off key use aq 2mm drill drill in 10mm then try and pull out keeping the drill level and square so you dont snap the drill bit

if the drill wont stay in screw in a no4 or metric 3 screw and pull out with pliers

you could always try a locksmith, preferably a member of the masterlocksmiths association, they have specialist key extractors and although it might not save u much money, worst case is they,d have to replace the barrel, you may make things worse and stress yourself out and have to fork out anyway

Thanks for the replies.

Big-all - regarding the drilling. If I'm able to drill in 10mm with the 2mm bit, how will that help me grab hold of the key with pliers? Is the idea that if I stop the drill whilst 'in' the key hole, it will in effect be stuck in the broken key hence allowing me to pull it out?

The locksmith is certainly an idea, however, I want to have a go first myself. The garage in question is at a holiday home in a small village in the Pyrenees hence I'd also need to ask around to find a locksmith. If I completely destroy the barrel, that at least IS something I know how to replace! We're off to the house in question tomorrow, hence fingers crossed.

Thanks again.

.

the drill bit bites into the metal so you use the drill to work out the broken bit once the drill bit has "anchored" its self into it
