The standard idea is to place the key switch in the perment line supply so one can switch it off to test the 3 hour running of emergancy light. It is common to use the click lighting plugs and with the emergancy sockets the loop goes to emergancy and all others goes to loop connection.

Key switches can either be single pole (just live) or double pole (live and neutral). The idea is to cut the power supply to the emergency light to see they function; whilst keeping the rest of the power to the lighting circuit ON.

Key switches are used so the emergency lights cannot be isolated by just anyone.

Use a key switch where the key cannot be removed in the OFF ( test ) position and fit a large tag to the key so it is noticable if it is left in the switch

The line to the emergency and the normal light must be taken through the key switch. This prevents the key switch being inadvertantly left in the OFF position, leading to discharged batteries.

Unfortunatly that doesn't always stop it happening!, however it does generate a call out later in the day when it gets dark and the evening shift (care home) find the lights don't work

OK if the test engineer is that bad then weld the test switch key to his van keys. Then he has to remove it before he can drive home.

Just hope there are no buses / taxis he can use after "losing" the van keys.

rob if you check my profile there is an emergency lighting diagram -also a thread that might be of some use to you..
