I was just speaking to someone who has wired their living room so that all the lamps can be switched on from a switch on the wall and also turned on/off independently. Anyone know the best way to achieve this?

Thanks

speaking and doing are two different things.

it reads that (for the sake of argument) you have 4 lights and 5 switches each light with a switch and a 5th switch elsewhere.

if that is the case the main switch can only turn off or on all the lights at the same time, however, if one light is on, you can turn it off at the light itself.

then when you turn them off at the main switch all lights will go off.

when you turn the main switch on, all but the one you previously turned off will come back on. (since it is still off at the light)

I suggest you ask your mate EXACTLY what the lights do (or dont)

:D

There is a switching system called EXODUS, all the lights are wired to this unit, you can then run a fixed swicthing position to it, from this you would also have a remote switch or hand held unit (this can also be dimmable if you wish.so basically you have all lights wired to the unit which can be activated from a normal wall switch and a separate switch which can be mounted anywhere you want.
The unit works on signal frequency and was designed for akward switch wires being chased into the walls on e.g listed buildings etc... it is the doggeys do dass, none of this mickey mouse stuff, it sounds as if it could be a solution to what you are looking for.
