Laying soild oak t&g onto sandstone

Hi, I'm new to this forum.

Under my hallway carpet is a painted sandstone floor. I am planning on laying t & g solid oak flooring on top.

The sandstone seems to be slightly damp, however this may be condensation.

Does anyone have any advice as to how to proceed here?

I have had advice that i float the floor on underlay and some say i should glue it down.

I don't want the floor to buckle or come up with the damp.

Does anyone have any advice.

You could use self adhesive foam underlay, insulates and still allows movement.

Is that underlay not just for engineered wood flooring.

Thats the issue I'm having, most say not for solid wood.

Solid oak boards are more prone to cupping than engineered boards, which is why you generally fix them down, to help hold them flat.

Of course this depends on a number of factors, board width, cut, moisture content, ambient humidity and stability of the enviroment. Get these within acceptable tolerances and you can glue solid boards down. But the more things you have to get right, the more there is to go wrong, and that is why people can shy away from saying their glue products are not suitable for solid boards
