Me again!

Side dormers? I read that front dormers are not permitted development, but rear is OK. But, are side also OK?

My house is long and thin and the roof is in 2 parts. I was going to put a dormer at the back, but thinking now, a long side dormer would open the space up better. The roof is steeper on the side too, so in theory I will be able to get more length with my 50m3.

Is this OK? or am I misunderstanding it?

Side-facing dormers are permitted development, though any windows facing the side must be obscured-glazed, and with a top opener minimum 1.7m above floor level.

This conflicts with Building Regs (means of escape), which requires an escape window with opening section maximum 1.1m above the floor. The way round this is to have a protected escape route with fire doors on all bedrooms at first floor, and habitable rooms on the ground floor.

Thanks.

I was thinking that if a side dormer I could have windows front and back in the bricks for light. Dormer just to create space for the bed. My was fe does not want a bed on a sloping roof.
