I want to make a plinth from 15mm mdf... I was advised to countersink the MDF and screw the pieces together... Can I screw directly into the 15mm edge if I use narrow screws, will this split the MDF? Or should I use 1"x1" to fix the pieces together on the inside? Also is it really lazy not to prime the MDF before painting it, or is there a single use paint i can use?

As it is a plinth ,I would suppose it is quite narrow so screws would split it.
The 1"x1" looks best ,plus some pva glue would do any harm .One coat paints never seem to do it for me and I don't think it lazy waiting for paint to dry, just don't waste you're time watching it :)

depends on loading
i have made many a but joint with complete sucsess with 12mm mdf

drill 3.2mm pilot hole full length of a 1.5 or 2"no6 wood twins avoid putting screws in the last inch

use the screwdriver bit as the countersink before inserting screws
screw and glue

if it starts to delaminate when you put a screw near the edge push glue into the crack and firmly clamp [accross the area of the screw ]till dry

Hi,

Wood glue all the way. It is so strong when set and you will break the timber before you can break the join.

As for priming MDF, YES YES YES. You can buy water based mdf primer which dries fairly quickly and wont peel off. Use a mini roller with a foam sleeve for best finishing results.

Hi,

It shouldnt split if you drill pilot holes, but may do if you dont.
Definately use primer or you will end up giving it umpteen coats of paint which will just soak in and in (been there - got tshirt)
