Me and the wife, moving into the garden...

Hello, the 3 kids are early to mid 20's now. All working hard, but not earning enough to move out to rent or buy.. Me and the wife are thinking about moving into a log cabin in the garden, and leaving them to live in the house. It's not a big garden, but could fit a 23' x 10' there without upsetting the neighbours. Thinking about the bathroom issue. Can you get a maserating/chemical toilet, like on a houseboat, to dump into a soakaway or similar? Maybe followed by the shower waste? It's a bit of crazy idea, have also thought of having a houseboat lifted over the house with a crane and left in the garden on blocks and moving into that. Over to you guys..

you'll need planning permission, of course, and mains drainage or a septic tank

as said planning permission is 100% required for separete living acommodation
you will also have to comply with building regs on insulation build quality etc

So your 3 kids are all working yet cannot, between them, move out? Yet are prepared to all live under one roof when its on a plate for them?

Please read the other posts, you will need PP.

Thanks for the replies. Obviously a lot more thought is required with regard to total building regulation compliance. Which of course is a must, unless I want the structure to be demolished afterwards. Cheers..

Good point! If they moved from West London to Devon, they probably could afford to rent. Thanks for the tip. :D

Are you saying they can't afford to rent a place each - or that they can't even afford to rent one between them?

Minimum wage of £6.08 per hour would give them each around £12,600 pre-tax a year (assuming no overtime or second jobs). That's at least £37,500 a year between them.

Surely they could rent a small semi or something between them with a combined income like that!

(and since they're siblings they wouldn't have to be classed as an HMO)

Or, they could each find house-shares of their own.

Then, if your place is too big for just the two of you when peace and quiet descends, you could choose to downsize and take the equity to enjoy your retirements.

You've done your bit. At mid 20's old it's time they flew the nest and made their own way in the world - even if their new nests are not going to be as nice and comfortable as the one you've provided for them for the last quarter century.

probably find they don't pay towards their keep, food. washing, or council tax. Sounds like the parents are terrified of them.

Move into the shed, Yeh right.
