Mystery hole

I am not sure if I am posting in the right forum but I have returned home to find this hole appeared in the front garden - we laid new soil this weekend and this clay/sand like bubble/hole has erupted up. Could it be a leak or something else? dDoes it look serious? Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Any chance of a leaking drain down there.....did you do any heavy excavation before laying the new soil?

Sorry,

Hard to tell how big it is, but it does look as though it could have been dug out by a creature. Have you seen any mole hills nearby?

Nope, just turned over the soil but we have only been here three months so maybe there has been a leak building up? I guess I should call the water board then?

I'd do a bit of excavation of my own first.....is the soil wet there?

It is but it has been raining, though it is seems wetter there quite a bit below the surface.

Looks like there may be water bubbling up there .......you won't need to go down too far to uncover the culprit!
