Hi all,

Wanting to take my current career (work as a radiographer) in a different direction.

Have heard a lot about the NEBOSH course, is it really good to have? if I want to go into health and safety could that basically be all I need to get a job in that field?

I'm thinking of doing it online/distance learning, is it a hard course?

I know nothing about the NEBOSH certificate or how to apply it but I would just say do some online research regarding jobs available afterwards. With a lot of courses these days, the paperwork means nothing unless you have some real working experience as well. Not trying to put you off but just beware of wasting your time & money.

Hi James.
May I ask why you want to leave radiography? I was a radiographer and left to become a teacher. It sounded a good idea at the time, but not long afterwards along came government interference, 'experts' telling everyone how to do their job, and the age of whingeing yet irresponsible parents.

The grass is always greener!

Course is fine.

You can get a job with it; (contrary to what Squeaky says above), it is a sad fact nowadays that ability to do a job (demonstrated by actually doing the job) is regularly trumped by someone with sod all proven experience, but the correct bit of paper.

Is it a hard course? Can you tie your own shoelaces?

What I will say, is that h & S is very much about using your eyes, then your brain; quoting a book in isolation will deservedly get you ridiculed.

I'm already specialised so the next step is management which I don't want to do, I'm a bit bored and don't see me doing radiography itself for much longer if I can help it, the degree you do is so limited so when I heard about the nebosh course I thought it could be a good idea to take me into health and safety in the nhs maybe, is there many jobs for this kind of thing?

If you want a job that involves H&S, then Nebosh is a distinct advantage. Even with jobs like facilities managers, it will help get a foot in the door.
Makes me laugh really. You can be a facilities manager with no tech knowledge at all, but as long as you have nebosh it's fine....doesn't matter that you are clueless about the kit on site....

So merely having the nebosh certificate could get me into health and safety with no prior experience??

Is it not one of them qualifications thats overdone these days so its less of an advantage?

Hard to explain really. If you want to get into anything H&S, then you really need nebosh. I think you would need prior experience in the chosen field in one respect or another though, or you could get lucky?

Hmm i wonder if being in healthcare in general would help me get a job doing healthcare health and safety with a nebosh

It probably would.
The course is not cheap, but could help you to progress.......
