I seem to have got my head around building a new dormer. However I have a couple of (fairly basic but fundamental) questions remaining.

1. What's the most common fixing method between various timbers - screws or nails? If nails, what size are usual and is a nail gun recommended for speed?

2. Other than bolting the outer-most joists together, are any other fixings (e.g. steel braces/straps, etc.) required anywhere on your average dormer without any steel beams?

If you are using 2" timber 4" galv nails piloted sometimes to stop splitting, large screws spax do large timber anti corrosive fixings, and a nail gun if you have one.
