We are planning to put in a new downstairs loo - will take up part of floorspace in kitchen but be entered from the hall.

This will require us to put up an L shaped section of stud wall to form the cloakroom walls.

Do we need to put any sound insulation in to comply with building regs... don't want to go ahead and build it and then find out it doesn't pass the rule book !!!

Thanks

Don't know, but FFIW, why not pack the gaps between the studs with sound-insulating quilt, and for good measure, double up the plasterboard to give extra weight, which also helps.

Better than having a snack in the kitchen while the sound of gushing **** into the bowl comes through a bit of plasterboard.

Just trying to find out what building regs say we should/must do.

You only need sound proofing between a bedroom and a room congaing a bog. Otherwise you can make the walls out of paper if you like. However the small cost of some additional plasterboard and a wadge of insulation seems small to save ones dignity ......

Insulation, £4 a square metre
Plasterboard, £2 a square metre

So.. 100 quid for a 2x4 metre partition double boarded both sides, means you don't have to listen to grandma taking a dump? Bargain

OK maybe we should do it - so what do I need to buy for the sound insulation ?

Thanks

Knauf do Earthwool Acoustic Quilt in rolls.
Anything similar will do -as long as it has a density of at least 10 kg/m2.
Ask at the local builder's merchants

(He means m3)

Knut earthwool acoustic roll was indeed the thing I was thinking of.. The 50mm stuff can be had for around 2 quid a square metre and you'll have a double thickness of it (it neatly wraps either side of pipes and wires in the centre of a 90mm stud partition that way)

You must not forget the toilet roll dolly.

That crochet'ed cover for the spare roll. :)
