I have bought a new light switch from B&Q. Both the old light switch and the instructions to the new one have wiring to the Common and L1 terminals, as well as earth. However the actual new switch has nothing labelled as common.

It has two L1 terminals next to each other, then underneath it has two L2 terminals next to each other. Above the L2s is a label "Intermediate".

How do I wire this switch with the existing wiring? It is just a simple, 1 switch, on and off bedroom light. Is it likely to be a different switch in the wrong box?

You have the wrong switch
You have bought an intermediate switch that is used in circuits with 3 or more switches.

If you only have two wires to connect, put one in one of the L1s and one in one of the L2s.
