I have just (last saturday) replastered one of my bedrooms and need to know how long the plaster has to dry before I can paint it.

I have looked at all the advice on sealing the plaster but I am unsure about when to do it. Some web sites advocate 6 months but I had hoped to do it before Christmas. I am working on a very tight/small/non-existant budget here and want to try and avoid specialist paints.

I plastered over horrendously damaged plasterboard with blue hawk finishing plaster. The depth varied according to the damage and my lack of skill (never done this before so last wall is better than the first).

I assume I can just sand down some of the imperfections left by my lack of skill. None of them seem too bad.

6 months is fine in the ideal world, however if you need to paint it give it as long as you can. Ive painted skimmed walls the next day when theyve had a heater on them with no adverse effects. not best practice, but when the client is a shop and thats all your allowed with regards to time then so be it!
Give it a mist coat of watered down emulsion to seal it and let it dry as long as you can. Use a decent roller and emulsion to top coat it and dont be too sparing when you load the roller.
As for the imperfections in the plaster, if they are minor then get some fine surface filler and just cover them with that.

Good luck
