Does anyone know where I can buy a flat bit of 50 mm diameter. I have some newel posts to fit which have a 50 mm X 80 mm dowel fixing.

I am using existing newels cut down to make newel bottoms to which I will fix ready made newel posts.

Any ideas on how to make sure the holes are bored vertically and straight?

i would use a 25 mm bit( or the biggest youve got ) then chizel out the rest , if you draw around the dowel should get it bang on :D

You could always try Clico in Shefield. They still make saw tooth bits that size, although they aren't cheap. If it's just a one off maybe look around for a cheapish set of Chinese sawtooth bits. Clico's address details are here

Woodbit, I have exactly the same dilema, I was going to attach a new newle turning to the original but the orignal was cut down so now its too short.

A 50mm bit is availbale form B&Q, richardburbidge sell them to attach thier newels etc.

Have you managed to attach the new newel post? if so how did u do it as im about to attempt the same thing
