Just noticed both rear brake lights have stopped working on my 2000 Nissan Micra.

Done the obvious bulb check, but they appear fine. The other lamps (indicators, lights etc) are also working.

Had a look at the fuse box and found a fuse labelled "rear lights", but this is also intact.

What other obvious steps have i missed?

You're right, the pedal switch is an obvious place to check.

Will i find the switch in the engine side or cabin side?

It's usually on the pedal bracket, above the brake pedal. (inside the car where your feet are)

If you unplug the wires to the switch and join them together the brake lights should come on. If they don't then it's not (probably not!) the switch
