ok, heres a puzzling one....

A couple of weeks ago I changed the washer in the toilet ballvalve... it was so old it had deformed and was hardly letting any water through... it used to take 20 mins for the cistern to refill..!!

Anyway, I changed the washer and it now takes less than 5 minutes to refill (fed direct from the mains at approx 1 bar), but occasionally, 2-3 times a day, when its refilling the pipe to the cistern resonates, producing a whining sound for 10-20 seconds, and you can feel the vibration through the bathroom floor.

This never happened before I changed the washer.

Airlock in the pipe...?? increased flow causing the pipework to vibrate...??

Any ideas..???

Thanks for your reply Peruse,

Do you mean to also change the white nozzle bit...??

I did try and get that out but it didn't want to come out, and it looked ok so I just replaced the washer... :(

The nut holding the top section of the valve assembly wouldn't come undone, and the whole plastic stem was twisting and I didn't want to break it!!

Thanks Nige, but its not really worth spending the money to replace the whole valve assembly as I'm in the process of refurbing the bathroom, and will be fitting a complete new WC in a couple of months.

Whats puzzling me is why this noise has started after a simple washer change.

Edit: maybe I will change it... I've just looked and Screwfix sell them for £3.39.... worth it for a couple of months peace and quiet..!!

they dont cost much and depending on the toilet you buy, you vcould always use it in the new bog.

But as previously said change the whole thing.
